## Hidden costs and limits

- Monthly billing penalty: $14.99/month ($179.88/year) vs $99.99/year, paying monthly costs 80% more. The annual plan is the only sensible option unless you are testing for a single month.
- Bank connection reliability: Monarch uses Plaid and MX for bank syncing. Some institutions (especially credit unions and smaller banks) disconnect frequently, requiring manual re-linking. This is an industry-wide problem, not Monarch-specific, but it still causes data gaps.
- No bill pay or debt payoff tools: Monarch tracks bills and subscriptions but does not facilitate payments or provide structured debt payoff strategies (avalanche/snowball). You will need a separate service for those workflows.
- No tax-loss harvesting or advanced investment features: Investment tracking shows performance and allocation but does not offer tax optimization suggestions like Empower or dedicated investment platforms.
- Crypto limited to Coinbase: Only Coinbase accounts sync natively for crypto. If you hold crypto on other exchanges or in self-custody wallets, you must add them as manual accounts.
- Data export limitations: You can export transactions as CSV, but there is no API or integration with tax software. Year-end reporting is manual.
