Do I need a vector database at all?
Not always. Under roughly a hundred thousand vectors, a Postgres extension or an in-process index is usually enough and removes an entire service from your stack. A dedicated database earns its place when you need filtered search at scale, live updates, or horizontal scaling.
What is the difference between an open-source and a managed vector database?
Mostly who handles failure. Weaviate, Qdrant and Milvus can all be self-hosted and several also sell a hosted tier; Pinecone is managed only. Self-hosting is cheaper per query and costs you the operational work of sharding, backups and upgrades.
Are vector databases free?
