xAI launched Grok Bot on August 11, 2026: persistent AI agents that get their own cloud computer, log into your tools, and finish multi-step jobs while you're away. Here's what it actually does and what it costs.

What is Grok Bot

Grok Bot is xAI's always-on AI agent product, launched in beta on August 11, 2026. Instead of a chat window that answers one prompt at a time, each Bot runs on its own persistent cloud computer, signs into the web apps and tools you already use, and works through multi-step jobs in the background without needing you to babysit every step.

Think of it less like a chatbot and more like hiring a remote teammate who has their own laptop, their own logins, and a habit of pinging you only when something needs your sign-off.

How Grok Bot works

Each Bot gets a dedicated cloud computer tied to your account. You give it access the same way you'd onboard a new hire: it signs into your existing tools with credentials you provide, then runs tasks on that machine, browser sessions, file operations, command-line work, and all, without you watching a live session.

A few mechanics matter here:

  • Persistence. A Bot keeps working after you close your laptop. It picks up a task, works through it over minutes or hours, and returns with results or a question when it hits something it can't resolve alone.
  • Learning by demonstration. You can show Grok Bot how you do a workflow once, and it picks up the pattern for future runs instead of needing the steps re-specified every time.
  • Multi-Bot coordination. You can put two to six Bots into a group chat together. They message each other, hand off ownership of a task mid-stream, and keep working without you manually copying context between separate sessions.
  • Shared machine, not sandboxed identities. xAI's own documentation is explicit that every Bot on an account shares one cloud computer, meaning shared browser cookies, shared files, and shared command-line credentials. The docs state plainly: do not use separate Bots as a security boundary.

That last point is worth sitting with before you hand a Bot access to anything sensitive. Two Bots that look like separate agents in your group chat are running on the same box with the same session cookies.

What it costs

Grok Bot has no standalone price tag. Access comes bundled into three existing subscription tiers:

  • SuperGrok Heavy: $300 a month, includes Grok Bot access.
  • Cursor Ultra: $200 a month for individuals, includes Grok Bot at no extra charge.
  • Cursor Teams Premium: $120 per seat per month, adds centralized billing, a team marketplace for skills and plugins, shared usage analytics, and SAML/OIDC single sign-on.

Each tier includes a weekly usage allowance for Bot activity. Go past it and xAI bills the overage from model and token cost directly, and there's currently no Grok Bot-specific spend cap. If you're the type to leave a Bot running overnight on an open-ended task, watch that meter.

The app ships on desktop, with a Linux build posted at launch, and on iOS.

What it's actually good at

Grok Bot is built for jobs that are repetitive, span multiple tools, and don't need a human staring at every intermediate step: pulling data out of a SaaS dashboard and reformatting it into a report, working through an inbox of similar requests, running a research pass across several sites and compiling notes, or handling a recurring workflow you've already demonstrated once. The persistent-computer model also suits long-running jobs that would otherwise time out in a normal chat session, like anything that needs to wait on an external process or retry a flaky step.

The multi-Bot group chat is the more novel piece: instead of running five separate chat sessions and manually relaying context between them, you get Bots that hand off work to each other directly. That's a genuine step past single-session agent products.

Honest limits

The safety picture around xAI's Grok line has drawn sustained criticism well before Grok Bot shipped, including reports flagging weak age verification and inadequate guardrails in Grok's consumer chat product. That context matters when you're deciding how much autonomy to hand an agent from the same company, especially one that's signing into your real accounts.

On the agent product itself, specifically:

  • No sandboxed Bot identities. As noted above, every Bot shares one cloud computer. If you're running Bots with access to different clients or different sensitivity levels, they are not isolated from each other.
  • No compliance certifications. There's no SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR, HIPAA, or FedRAMP claim attached to Grok Bot at launch. Regulated industries or anyone with contractual compliance requirements should treat this as a hard blocker for now, not a paperwork gap to close later.
  • It's beta. xAI is calling this a beta product. Expect rough edges, changing limits, and a usage-billing model that isn't fully capped yet.
  • Access is gated behind expensive tiers. There's no cheap way to try Grok Bot. The floor is $120 per seat per month on Cursor Teams Premium, and that's before any overage.

How it compares

Grok Bot enters a field that already has meaningfully different approaches to "AI agent that works without supervision":

  • OpenClaw is open-source and local-first. You run it on your own infrastructure instead of xAI's cloud computer, which sidesteps the shared-machine security question entirely, at the cost of doing your own hosting and ops.
  • Hermes Agent is self-hosted and self-improving, aimed at teams that want an agent that gets better at their specific workflows over time without sending that workflow data to a third party's servers.
  • Manus is a cloud agent built around general-purpose task execution, closer to Grok Bot's model of "agent with its own machine," but without the multi-agent group-chat coordination layer.
  • Devin is scoped specifically to software engineering: it writes, tests, and ships code autonomously, rather than operating arbitrary web tools the way Grok Bot does.

The honest way to place Grok Bot: it's the most general-purpose of the group, willing to operate almost any tool you can log it into, and the only one built around multiple agents actively coordinating with each other. That breadth is also where its risk concentrates, since a shared cloud computer with no sandboxing and no compliance certifications is a wide surface to hand real credentials to.

Verdict

Grok Bot is a legitimate step past single-turn AI chat: a persistent, multi-tool agent that keeps working while you're away and can coordinate with other agents instead of running in isolation. If you're already paying for Cursor Ultra or SuperGrok Heavy, it costs nothing extra to try on low-stakes, repetitive work.

Where it falls short today is trust infrastructure. No sandboxing between Bots, no compliance certifications, and a company with a rocky recent safety record on its consumer product are three separate reasons to keep Grok Bot away from your most sensitive accounts and workflows until the beta matures. Start it on tasks you'd hand to a new contractor on day one, not tasks that touch production data or regulated information.
