Figma's Professional Full seat is the baseline: $16 per editor a month billed annually, or $960 a year for five editors. Penpot undercuts it with a free Professional plan and an Unlimited plan at $7 per editor a month, capped at $175 a month. Sketch is the closest paid match at $12 per editor a month billed yearly. Visily and Uizard have free AI design plans with limits, and Moqups covers wireframes for one seat free.
8 Figma alternatives compared on price per editor, free plan limits and fit, with prices checked on vendor pages in October 2026.
For a five-person team, Figma's Professional plan is a $960 a year line item before anyone touches an AI credit. Several tools sell a per-editor seat for less, and a few give a real project a free plan to start in. The buying question is rarely which tool is best. It is which cheaper tool covers the job you actually do, and what it costs once you outgrow the free tier.
Toolradar data: 441 UI and UX design tools sit in our catalog today. 79% of them offer a free or freemium plan, and 21% are paid only. A free starting point is common here, so the decision usually comes down to the free plan's limits and the price of the first paid seat.
This guide compares eight alternatives on the price of one editor and of five editors billed annually, on the limits of each free plan, and on the job each tool does. Our methodology: every price comes from the vendor's own pricing page, checked in October 2026. We quote the cheapest paid plan that gives an editor full access, plus the free plan, never a promotional rate. Picks are ordered by how closely they replace Figma's core job. Figma stays in the table as the baseline.

What a Figma alternative has to match
Figma is a browser-based tool for interfaces, prototypes and design systems. Its core job is a shared canvas where several people edit one file at once, with components that update everywhere they are used, auto layout, interactive prototypes, and an inspect view that gives developers measurements and code. Teams that run a design system treat Figma as the reference point for that workflow.
An alternative counts here if it covers most of that job: live editing for more than one person, reusable components, prototypes and developer handoff. A tool that only exports pictures of a layout does not replace it, and neither does a tool built mainly to publish websites. For the systems side of the question, see best design systems tools.
Per-seat pricing turns a small gap into a large bill
Figma's free Starter plan is generous for solo work, so the entry price looks small. The bill grows with the number of people who need to edit. At the annual price a Professional Full seat is $16 a month, so five editors cost $960 a year and 25 editors cost $4,800. Penpot prices its Unlimited plan per editor with a monthly cap. Once a team reaches 25 editors the cap holds the bill at $2,100 a year, which is $2,700 a year less than Figma's bill at that size. That is the number to take to a budget meeting, not the entry price.
Figma also sells cheaper seats. A Dev seat and a Collab seat cost less than a Full seat on Professional, and viewers and commenters get in free on any paid plan, so the seat count can be smaller than the headcount. Quote Figma from the annual toggle, which is the default on figma.com/pricing. Switch it to Monthly there before you budget for a team that may change size during the year.
Key Features to Look For
A free Starter plan that carries solo work (Essential)
Figma's Starter plan is free, with unlimited drafts, unlimited viewers, unlimited file storage and 150 AI credits a day up to 500 a month. Unlimited files and projects for one team start on Professional.
Per-seat pricing with cheaper roles (Essential)
A Full seat edits everything. Dev seats add Dev Mode and Collab seats cover FigJam, and both cost less than a Full seat on Professional. Stakeholders view and comment without a seat, so the bill tracks editors, not headcount.
Penpot's monthly cap (Essential)
Penpot's Unlimited plan charges per editor and caps the bill each month, so the cost stops growing once a team reaches 25 editors.
AI quotas that look like trials (Important)
Visily's Starter includes 300 AI credits a month, and Uizard's Free plan includes 3 AI generations a month against 500 on Uizard Pro. Read the quota before you build a workflow on AI-drafted screens.
Export and handoff rights (Important)
Visily's Starter exports are 1x resolution with a watermark, and its paid tiers add Figma export and import. Uizard Pro adds developer handoff to React and CSS. Affinity has no iPad app yet.
What to check before you switch
-
Seats first. Count editors, not people: viewers and commenters are free on Figma's paid plans and on Sketch subscriptions. Check whether a per-editor price is billed monthly or yearly before you compare it with Figma's annual rate. A Dev seat costs less than a Full seat, and many engineers only need to inspect.
-
Export rights. A free plan with watermarked or 1x exports cannot deliver a client file, so test one real export first.
-
Project count. Uizard's Free plan and Moqups' Free plan both stop at 2 projects, so a second client forces an upgrade.
-
Platform fit. Sketch's desktop app is Mac only, so a mixed team works in the browser app on Windows. Affinity runs on Mac and Windows with no iPad app yet and no live multiplayer inside the app.
Evaluation Checklist
Export one finished frame from the free plan and check for watermarks and resolution before you rely on the tool.
Count editors and viewers separately, then price only the editors.
Confirm the billing term at checkout, because monthly and annual prices differ on most of these plans.
Open a real Figma file in the candidate tool if you have to move work across, and note what breaks.
Test live editing with two people on one file before you drop Figma for a team.

Mistakes to Avoid
- ×
Comparing Figma's free Starter plan with a paid tool's trial, when the team will need Professional from the first sprint.
- ×
Counting every teammate as a Full seat. Viewers and commenters are free on Figma's paid plans, and a Dev or Collab seat covers many roles at a lower price.
- ×
Ignoring exports. A free plan with watermarked 1x exports can block a client deliverable.
- ×
Treating a free AI quota as a team budget. Three free generations a month on Uizard is a trial, not a workflow.
Expert Tips
- →
Price the team, not the seat. At five editors Penpot's Unlimited plan is $420 a year, against $960 for Figma Professional, and the gap widens past 25 editors.
- →
Read the billing toggle. Figma's Full-seat figure is the annual price, so check the monthly rate before you budget a team that changes size.
- →
Test the handoff. Export one real frame and one component to the developer who will build it before you move a whole project.
- →
Keep Figma for the library if your design system already lives there. A cheaper editor can cover designers who only edit, while Figma's Dev seat covers engineers who only inspect.
Red Flags to Watch For
-
A free plan with no export rights for commercial work.
-
Per-seat prices that are not clearly stated as monthly or annual.
-
Pricing shown only in euros or pounds. Compare the US dollar page only, because VAT and exchange rates change the figure.
-
Free AI credits that run out inside a single sprint of real use.
The Bottom Line
If you pay for Figma today, the cheapest serious move is Penpot. Its Professional plan is free with no file limits, and its Unlimited plan is priced per editor with a monthly cap. Sketch is the paid pick for a Mac team that wants a stable desktop app. Visily and Uizard make sense for AI-led early work, and Affinity is free for individuals who do not need live multiplayer.
Keep Figma when the design system, the developer handoff and the shared libraries already run through it. That is the workflow the higher price buys. For more on the category, see the cheapest design software guide and the Figma alternatives page.
