What is Alibaba Cloud MCP?

Editorial review
Alibaba Cloud's operations MCP server maps its cloud APIs onto tools an AI client can call, with the tool names mirroring the underlying API actions so behavior is predictable. Compute coverage is the deepest: DescribeInstances, RunInstances, StartInstances, StopInstances, RebootInstances and DeleteInstances handle the ECS lifecycle, while RunCommand executes commands on instances and ResetPassword and ReplaceSystemDisk handle recovery work. DescribeRegions, DescribeZones, DescribeAvailableResource, DescribeImages and DescribeSecurityGroups supply the placement and image information needed before provisioning. Other services follow the same pattern. Networking exposes DescribeVpcs and DescribeVSwitches. Database tools cover DescribeDBInstances plus start, stop and restart for RDS instances. Object storage tools list buckets, create and delete a bucket and list objects. Monitoring tools pull CPU usage, memory usage, load and disk metrics from CloudMonitor, which lets an agent check whether an instance is actually under pressure before resizing it. Deployment tools built on Operation Orchestration Service upload artifacts to object storage and deploy code to ECS, then report deployment status and the last deployment's details. A small set of local tools list directories, run shell scripts and analyze a project's deploy stack, so the agent can inspect the repository it is deploying. The server installs through uvx and authenticates with an Alibaba Cloud access key ID and secret in the environment. It targets developers and operations engineers running workloads on Alibaba Cloud.

Is Alibaba Cloud MCP worth the price?

75/100

The Alibaba Cloud MCP pricing is extremely generous with a free open source tier, making it accessible for developers and small teams, but the absence of paid tiers or billing cycles means it lacks scalability for enterprise cloud management needs.

This is a fair if limited offering, best suited for individual developers or small projects who want to self-host and avoid vendor lock-in.

Hidden Costs & Gotchas

No paid tiers means no official uptime SLA

Community support only may delay issue resolution

Self-hosting incurs your own infrastructure costs

No managed or cloud-hosted option available

Missing advanced features requiring custom integrations

How Alibaba Cloud MCP Compares to Competitors

Alibaba Cloud MCP's free open source tier rivals similar open source cloud management tools like Terraform or Pulumi, but lacks their paid enterprise plans with dedicated support. It is stronger on transparency and cost than proprietary cloud monitoring suites, but falls short on out-of-the-box integration depth and scalability for large deployments.
