Is Raycast worth the price?

9/10

Raycast has redefined what a macOS launcher can be — it is less a Spotlight replacement and more a productivity operating system.

The free tier is genuinely excellent and replaces $30-50/year worth of separate Mac utilities. Pro at $8/month is compelling primarily for the AI integration: having GPT-4o and Claude accessible via a keyboard shortcut, with context from your clipboard and files, is a workflow accelerant that justifies the cost for developers.

The Advanced AI add-on at $8/month extra is niche — most users will find the standard Pro AI models sufficient. The main limitation is macOS-only: no Windows or Linux version exists or is planned.

Hidden Costs & Gotchas

macOS only

no Windows or Linux support. Teams with mixed OS environments cannot standardize on Raycast — only Mac users benefit

AI message limits on Free

50 messages/month with a daily cap. Power users hit this within a few days, forcing either the Pro upgrade or switching to ChatGPT/Claude for the rest of the month

Advanced AI add-on ($8/mo) is separate from Pro

total cost for Pro + Advanced AI is $16-18/mo. The naming can be confusing — Pro includes standard AI models, Advanced AI adds frontier models

Extension quality varies

the thousands of community extensions are unvetted. Some are unmaintained, buggy, or break with Raycast updates. Core extensions (built by Raycast) are reliable; third-party ones are hit-or-miss

Cloud Sync requires Pro

free tier has no cross-device sync. Clipboard history, snippets, and settings are local only. If you use multiple Macs, Pro is essentially mandatory

Annual commitment

Pro at $8/mo requires annual billing ($96/year). Monthly is $10/mo ($120/year) — a 25% premium for flexibility

Which Plan Do You Need?

Mac power users who want a better SpotlightFree

Clipboard history, window management, snippets, calculator, emoji picker, and access to thousands of community extensions — all free, forever. The 50 AI messages/month and 5 notes are limited but sufficient for casual use. This alone replaces multiple paid utilities (Rectangle, CopyClip, TextExpander basic).

Developers and power users who rely on AI assistance and cloud syncPro ($8/mo annual or $10/mo monthly)

Unlimited clipboard history, unlimited notes, cloud sync across Macs, custom themes, and built-in AI with GPT-4o, Claude, and other models. The AI alone replaces a ChatGPT Plus subscription ($20/mo) for quick queries, translation, and code generation — at less than half the price.

Heavy AI users who need frontier models for complex tasksPro + Advanced AI ($16/mo annual)

Adds access to advanced AI models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Perplexity, Mistral, and xAI. At $16/mo total ($8 Pro + $8 Advanced AI add-on), it is cheaper than dedicated subscriptions to any single frontier AI provider.

Engineering teams sharing snippets, quicklinks, and commandsTeams ($12/user/mo annual or $15/user/mo monthly)

Shared snippets, quicklinks, and custom commands across the team. Centralized management with unlimited seats. Team Pro adds AI for all members. Most valuable for standardizing developer workflows across an organization.

Our Recommendation

startup

Start with the free tier — it replaces Spotlight, Rectangle (window management), and clipboard managers at zero cost. Upgrade to Pro ($8/mo) when you find yourself hitting the 50 AI message limit or needing cloud sync between Macs. Skip Advanced AI unless you specifically need frontier models for complex coding tasks.

enterprise

Teams plan at $12/user/mo standardizes developer tooling across Mac users. Shared snippets for code review comments, quicklinks for internal tools, and team commands for common workflows. Enterprise at custom pricing adds SAML/SCIM and compliance features. The ROI case: if Raycast saves each developer 15 minutes/day, the $144/year/user cost is recovered in about 2 days of engineering time.

freelancer

Pro at $8/mo annual is the sweet spot. The AI integration alone saves time worth more than the subscription — quick code explanations, email drafting, and translation without context-switching to a browser. If budget is tight, the free tier is still excellent; Alfred Powerpack ($34 one-time) is the cheaper long-term option if you do not need AI.
