Best Free VPN for Firestick in 2026: 8 VPNs With Fire TV Apps, Free Plans First

Last verified 4 October 2026. The best free VPN for Firestick is Proton VPN Free: it has no data cap, it installs from the Amazon Appstore, and it is the only free plan here whose Fire TV pages mention a Vega OS app for Amazon's newer Linux-based sticks. But Proton says streaming works only on paid plans, and the other free plans cap data or restrict speed, so a free VPN protects your Firestick better than it unblocks shows.

Below are 8 VPNs with Fire TV apps, 5 with free plans and 3 paid, ranked on what each vendor publishes about Fire OS and Vega OS support, free data, device limits and price. Check which operating system your stick runs before you install anything, because the two need different apps.

Toolradar data: of the 35 VPN tools in our catalog, 5 are completely free and another 16 are freemium.

Our picks: the best VPNs for Firestick, free first

1. Proton VPN Free

Proton VPN's free plan is the best place to start. Proton's Fire OS guide says the app works on Fire OS 7+ and installs from the Amazon Appstore: open Find, choose Appstore, search for "proton vpn" and select Get. Since September 16, 2026 there is also a Vega OS app (version 1.0), and Proton says you cannot install its Android app on a Vega OS stick. On the free plan you select Quick connect and Proton picks the fastest free server, in the Netherlands, Japan, Romania, Poland, Norway, Switzerland, Singapore, Mexico, Canada or the US. You cannot choose a country.

The limit is streaming. Proton says you can run the app on the free plan, but streaming support is only available on paid plans, and its Firestick page adds that streaming services may limit access from IP addresses tied to free VPN servers. The free plan covers one device at a time at "medium" speed with no ads. Paid plans cover 10 devices and carry a 30-day money-back guarantee.

One inconsistency: the Fire OS guide gives Fire OS 7+ as the minimum, while Proton's Android TV page says Appstore builds support Android 7.1 and later, so check the Appstore listing on an older stick.

Pick it if you want an uncapped free VPN to keep your ISP out of your viewing, or you own a Vega OS stick, and you do not need to unblock streaming.

2. Windscribe Free

Windscribe has a native Fire TV app in the Amazon Appstore, with a Lazy Login that links your account from your phone so you do not type with the remote. It works on Gen 2 or newer Fire TV devices, including the 4K, 4K Max and Cube. The original 2014 Fire TV is too old, and Windscribe suggests a router for it.

The free plan gives 10 GB a month once you confirm an email (2 GB without one), servers in 10 countries and one account on unlimited devices. Windscribe's own estimate is that 10 GB covers about four to five hours of HD video or roughly ten hours of standard definition, so it suits occasional viewing, not binges. It defaults to WireGuard, which it says uses less of a stick's limited CPU than OpenVPN, and its R.O.B.E.R.T. blocker filters ads and trackers at the DNS level. Streaming-optimized servers are a Pro feature. Pro costs $9 a month or $69 a year, and Build-A-Plan charges $1 per location per month with a $3 minimum. Windscribe's Fire TV pages do not mention Vega OS.

Pick it if you want to pick a country, cover several devices on one free account and can live with 10 GB.

3. PrivadoVPN Free

PrivadoVPN lists Fire TV among the devices its free apps run on, and its setup guide is short: open Find, search for PrivadoVPN, select Get, log in and tap the lock icon. The free plan gives 10 GB a month at uncapped speed, and PrivadoVPN says you can browse, stream and download on it. After that you drop to Lite Mode, which reduces speed and keeps the kill switch, until your allowance refreshes.

Its pages disagree on devices. The free page says "unlimited devices" for its apps, while the pricing FAQ says a free account uses 1 device. Paid accounts cover up to 10 devices with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Its Fire TV pages do not mention Vega OS.

Pick it if you want a bigger shot at full-speed video within a monthly allowance and one connected device is enough.

4. hide.me Free

hide.me has a Fire TV app in the Amazon Appstore, and its Fire TV page says no registration is needed: download it, pick a server and connect. The free plan has unlimited data, 8 locations and one connection, but restricted speeds, and streaming-optimized servers are for Premium users only. The app includes auto-reconnect when you switch the device on, and split tunneling is listed on all plans.

On its pricing page, Premium is €2.69 a month on the 26-month plan, billed €69.99 every 26 months, with 92 locations, 10 connections and a 30-day money-back guarantee. hide.me says a plan always renews at the same price and duration. Its Fire TV page does not mention Vega OS.

Pick it if you want an uncapped free app with no account and can accept slower, non-streaming servers.

5. ZoogVPN Free

ZoogVPN has a Fire TV page saying you can get the app from the Amazon App Store or ZoogVPN's website, with split tunneling and automatic server selection in the app. The Fire TV page describes the free plan as 2 GB of monthly data on select servers, but its free VPN page says 10 GB a month, 5 locations, one device and partial access to streaming services, so confirm the allowance when you sign up.

Premium raises that to unlimited data, 100+ locations and 10 devices, and costs $9.99 a month, $39.99 for a year or $59.99 for 27 months, with a 7-day money-back guarantee. The Fire TV page does not mention Vega OS.

Pick it if you want a free allowance with a choice of location and plan to upgrade cheaply if it works for you.

6. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN is the paid option with the clearest Fire TV documentation, updated September 22, 2026. It has an app for Fire OS 6 and above and a separate app for Vega OS, downloaded from a different link. Its Fire TV page lists the Fire TV Stick HD (Fire OS and Vega OS models), the 4K Select (Vega OS), the 3rd Gen and Lite, Fire TV smart TVs and Fire tablets. To check your OS, open Settings, My Fire TV, About: Fire OS shows a version like 8.1.7.4, and Vega OS shows something like OS 1.1.

On its order page, Basic is €2.49 a month as a promotion for the first 28 months (€69.72 billed up front), then renews at €79.95 a year, with 10 simultaneous devices and a 30-day money-back guarantee for first-time users. Advanced covers 12 devices and Pro 14.

Pick it if you want a paid app that covers both Fire OS and Vega OS sticks and accept a renewal rate above the promotion.

7. Surfshark

Surfshark installs from the Amazon Appstore and, per its help center, needs Fire OS 6.0 or later, although its download page says Fire OS 5. It says the first-generation Fire Stick does not support any VPN service, and allows unlimited simultaneous connections on one account.

Its Vega OS app is newer and thinner. Surfshark says it supports core functions: server selection, secure connections and WireGuard, while Clean Web (its ad blocker) and a kill switch are "in development and coming soon." A troubleshooting article updated April 24, 2026 adds that protocol switching is not available there and that Vega OS is currently on the Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025). On its pricing page, the Starter plan is €2.49 a month, or €67.23 for the first 27 months, with a 30-day money-back guarantee. The renewal price is not shown in the page text.

Pick it if you want one plan for the whole house with no device limit and accept a reduced Vega OS app.

8. NordVPN

NordVPN's support page says the app comes from the Amazon Appstore, and that Amazon does not block it. It is blunt about older hardware: first-generation Fire TV Sticks do not allow VPN connections, and second-generation sticks and the Fire TV Stick Basic edition use Android versions too old for the app. It adds that new Firesticks running Vega OS will be missing some features temporarily. In the Fire app you get Quick Connect, split tunneling, a choice of NordLynx, NordWhisper and OpenVPN protocols, and auto-connect.

Up to 10 devices can connect at once, new subscriptions have a 30-day money-back guarantee, and plans run 2 years, 1 year or 1 month. Nord's support pages do not publish prices.

Pick it if you have a recent Fire OS stick and want a mainstream paid app with split tunneling.

How to choose a free VPN for Firestick

Check whether your stick runs Fire OS or Vega OS. Amazon began rolling out Vega OS, a Linux-based system, in late 2025 on newer sticks such as the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, and Fire OS apps and Vega OS apps are separate downloads. Proton, ExpressVPN and Surfshark publish separate Vega OS apps, and NordVPN says Vega OS sticks are missing some features. Windscribe's, PrivadoVPN's, hide.me's and ZoogVPN's Fire TV pages do not mention Vega OS, so confirm before you buy or sign up.

Check the generation. Vendors disagree on older sticks. NordVPN says second-generation sticks are too old, while Windscribe says Gen 2 or newer works and IPVanish says it supports second-generation sticks and later. Proton asks for Fire OS 7+, ExpressVPN for Fire OS 6+ and Surfshark for 6.0+. First-generation sticks run no VPN app, so protect them with a router.

Expect a free VPN to protect more than it unblocks. Proton says streaming is paid only. hide.me keeps streaming servers for Premium, Windscribe keeps streaming-optimized servers for Pro, and ZoogVPN's free plan has only partial streaming access. For more free options, see our guide to the best free VPNs.

Count your devices. Windscribe's free account covers unlimited devices. Proton, hide.me and ZoogVPN allow one at a time, and PrivadoVPN's pages disagree.

Watch for apps outside the Appstore. Mullvad says its app is not in the Amazon Appstore and must be sideloaded with Downloader, on Android 9 or newer. AdGuard VPN's Android TV page lists Google Play and an APK, not the Appstore. Because Fire OS is Android-based, the picks in our best free VPN for Android guide are worth a look, but only Appstore apps install without sideloading.

Know the other paid apps. Private Internet Access lists the Amazon Appstore or an APK, CyberGhost lists a Fire TV app with 7 devices and a 45-day guarantee on its 2-year plan, and IPVanish lists Fire TV with unlimited devices. None of those three Fire TV pages mentions Vega OS.

FAQ

Is there a completely free VPN for Firestick?

Proton VPN Free has no data cap and hide.me's free plan has unlimited data, but Proton says streaming is paid only and hide.me restricts speeds and keeps streaming servers for Premium. Windscribe, PrivadoVPN and ZoogVPN cap data.

Can I stream Netflix with a free VPN on Firestick?

Vendors mostly say no. Proton limits streaming to paid plans, hide.me and Windscribe reserve streaming servers for Premium or Pro, and ZoogVPN says its free plan has partial access. PrivadoVPN says you can stream within its 10 GB.

Does a VPN work on every Firestick?

No. First-generation sticks run no VPN app, vendors disagree about second-generation sticks, and Vega OS sticks need a separate app. Check Settings, My Fire TV, About first.

How do I install a VPN on a Firestick?

Open Find, search for the VPN's name in the Amazon Appstore and select Get, then sign in. Proton, PrivadoVPN, hide.me, Windscribe, ExpressVPN, Surfshark and NordVPN all describe that route. Sideloading is only for apps that are not in the Appstore.

Will a free VPN slow down my Firestick?

Often. hide.me restricts free speeds, ZoogVPN warns of limited speed and possible congestion, and PrivadoVPN reduces speed after 10 GB. Proton rates its free speed as medium.

Which paid VPN has a Vega OS app?

ExpressVPN and Surfshark publish Vega OS apps, and Proton has one on both free and paid plans. NordVPN says Vega OS sticks are missing some features. Surfshark's Vega app lacks a kill switch for now.

Bottom line

Install Proton VPN Free on your Firestick if you want an uncapped, no-cost VPN on either Fire OS or Vega OS, and accept that it will not unblock streaming. Pick Windscribe if you want to choose a country and cover every device on one free account, and ExpressVPN if you want a paid app that supports both operating systems. Check your stick's operating system before you install, and skip any free VPN whose Fire TV page does not name your stick.
