The Bottom Line

Price
Paid plans only. Compare plans

Key facts

  • Monitors eight developer tools (Vercel, GitHub, Stripe, Claude, Codex, etc.) in a single menu bar with a status ring and per-tool cards.
  • Connects directly to each service from your computer; no intermediary server, and keys/sign-ins stay local, only the relevant service receives them.
  • One-time purchase (no subscription), lifetime license, cross-platform Mac and Windows, with free updates and a 7-day money-back guarantee.

Pros

  • Privacy-focused: keys and sign-ins stay on your device, and no server of the product sits in between
  • One-time payment with lifetime license, no recurring subscription
  • Simple, glanceable UI for monitoring multiple dev tools at once

Cons

  • Only eight tools are supported; more connectors are promised but not yet available
  • Requires macOS or Windows, so older systems aren't supported

What is Kitbar?

Kitbar is a desktop menu bar app that monitors the health and status of your most-used developer tools, Vercel, GitHub, Stripe, Claude Code, Codex, and more, so you can keep working without switching contexts. It displays a subtle ring indicator that stays faint when there's nothing new and brightens when there's unread news, along with individual cards for each connected tool. You can glance at the bar to see if a deployment succeeded, a payment came through, or your API rate limits are running low, then dive into details when needed. The app connects directly to each service from your computer, using the same endpoints their own dashboards use, so no third-party server sits between you and your data. Authentication is handled via an already-signed-in command-line tool, a browser sign-in, or a generated API key. Keys and sign-ins remain on your machine and travel only to the service they belong to, the privacy policy lists every network request the app makes. Claude Code and Codex are queried locally, and Kitbar never reads their sign-in session. Kitbar is a one-time purchase with no subscription. It runs on macOS or Windows. A single license key activates the app on up to 3, 6, 10, 20, 30, or 50 devices, covering both Mac and Windows. Updates are delivered automatically, and the developer provides email support.

Key Features

  • Unified status bar with an at-a-glance ring indicator (faint when idle, bright on unseen news)
  • Eight built-in tool connectors: Vercel, GitHub, Stripe, Claude Code/Codex, and more, each in its own card with per-tool permissions
  • Direct API access per tool, no third-party server in between; every network request is documented in the privacy policy
  • Connects via an already-signed-in CLI, browser sign-in, or API key; keys remain in your system keychain
  • Runs Claude Code and Codex locally to read limits without ever accessing their sign-in
  • Cross-platform support: macOS 15+ (Apple silicon & Intel) and Windows 10/11
  • One-time license purchase covering multiple devices (3–50) with a single key for both Mac and Windows
  • Automatic free updates and email support from the developers

Is Kitbar worth the price?

Good value

The $9.99 launch price is a steal for a lifetime license covering all eight tools on three devices, making it an excellent entry point for early adopters.

The $29 standard price is still fair for a one-time payment, especially compared to typical subscription-based dev tools. Best for individual developers or small teams who want a permanent, low-cost monitoring solution without recurring fees.

Kitbar FAQ

How does Kitbar handle the connection to a service like Vercel or Stripe?

Kitbar connects directly to each service from your computer, using the same API endpoints their own dashboards use. You authenticate either through a command-line tool that's already signed in, a sign-in in your browser, or by creating a key. No server of Kitbar's is involved in the connection; it's a direct request from your machine.

Does Kitbar ever read my Claude or ChatGPT account sign-in?

No. For Claude Code and Codex, Kitbar runs them locally on your computer and reads their output about your current usage and limits. It never touches the sign-in session those tools keep. For Claude Code, it reports limits for Pro and Max plans; API usage is read using an admin key you create yourself.

What permissions does a tool need from me?

Each tool's Settings page in Kitbar specifies exactly which permissions are required, with a link to where the key is made. In most cases, a read-only key suffices for monitoring status. Operations like redeploy or re-run need a key with write permission; the card will tell you when your key lacks the ability to perform them.

Can I move my license to a different computer later?

Yes. The settings allow you to free a device you no longer use, so you can deactivate a machine and activate the license on a new one. Your license key works on both Mac and Windows, and the number of concurrent devices depends on the plan you chose at checkout (3, 6, 10, 20, 30, or 50).

Why isn't Kitbar available in an app store?

The developer sells it directly to ship updates the day they're ready, without app store review delays. Every build is signed and checked by your operating system when you open it, and the Mac build is notarized by Apple, so it remains secure.

Which operating systems are supported?

Kitbar officially supports macOS 15 Sequoia and later, on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs, and Windows 10 and 11. A Microsoft Store version is planned but not yet available.

What happens if I encounter an issue or it doesn't work for me?

You can request a full refund within 7 days of purchase by writing to the developer, no questions asked. After that period, you can still get email support from the people who build the app.

Are there any ongoing costs after the one-time payment?

No. Kitbar is a one-time purchase with a lifetime license. You receive free updates automatically and there is no subscription fee. The only cost is the initial payment, which varies depending on the number of devices you choose and whether you buy during the launch discount period.
