Midjourney Pricing in 2026
Plans, hidden costs, and alternatives compared
Is Midjourney worth the price?
Midjourney produces the best AI-generated images for artistic and creative work — and its pricing reflects the premium positioning.
At $10/mo for Basic with ~3.3 fast GPU hours and no Relax mode, casual users hit limits quickly. The Standard plan at $30/mo is the real product: unlimited Relax mode generations means you can create as many images as you want, just slower.
The Pro plan at $60/mo adds Stealth mode (keeps your images private) and more fast hours — essential for commercial work where you don't want competitors seeing your prompts. There is no free tier, no API (officially), and no transparent per-image pricing — you buy GPU time, not images.

Hidden Costs & Gotchas
No free tier
unlike DALL-E (free via Bing), Stable Diffusion (open source), or Adobe Firefly (25 free credits), Midjourney requires a paid subscription from day one
Fast GPU hours are opaque
Midjourney measures usage in GPU minutes, not images. A standard V6 image takes ~30 seconds, but upscaling, variations, and video consume more. The exact conversion is undocumented
Relax mode is NOT available on Basic ($10/mo)
when your fast hours run out, you stop generating. This is the #1 reason users upgrade to Standard within the first month
Stealth mode (private images) costs $60/mo minimum (Pro plan): everything you generate on Basic and Standard is publicly visible in the Midjourney gallery. Competitors can see your prompts and outputs
Video generation (Midjourney V6 video) consumes fast GPU time at 5-10x the rate of still images — a single 5-second video clip can burn 15-30 minutes of fast time
No official API
programmatic access requires workarounds through Discord or unofficial APIs. Enterprise/API access is in closed beta with no public pricing
Extra fast GPU time costs ~$4/hour when purchased as an add-on. A heavy production day burning 5 extra hours costs $20 on top of your subscription
Annual billing requires upfront payment ($96-1,152) with no prorated refunds for downgrade or cancellation. Monthly billing is 20% more expensive but lower risk
How Midjourney Compares
Individual creator generating ~500 images/month, 12 months
Which Plan Do You Need?
~3.3 fast GPU hours covers ~200 standard images. No Relax mode means you stop when hours run out. Fine for experimenting, not for production work.
~15 fast GPU hours + unlimited Relax mode is the sweet spot. You can generate thousands of images per month in Relax mode (slower but free). This is what most users should buy.
~30 fast GPU hours + Stealth mode. Privacy matters for commercial work — without Stealth, every image you generate is visible in Midjourney's public gallery. Also enables 12 concurrent fast jobs vs 3 on Standard.
~60 fast GPU hours for production-scale workflows. Same features as Pro but 2x the fast time. Worth it when Pro's 30 hours consistently runs out mid-month.
Our Recommendation
Worth it if...
Image quality is your top priority. Midjourney V6 produces the most aesthetically pleasing, creative, and photorealistic AI images of any generator. If you're a professional designer, content creator, or concept artist, the output quality justifies the premium over cheaper alternatives.
Skip if...
You need occasional AI images alongside other AI capabilities — ChatGPT Plus at $20/mo gives you DALL-E + GPT-4o. Or if you need transparent commercial licensing with provenance tracking — Adobe Firefly is safer for brand use. Also skip if you need an API for programmatic generation — Midjourney has no official API.
Negotiation tips
No negotiation available — pricing is fixed for all users. The only discount is 20% off with annual billing. Teams share no pooled resources — each user needs their own subscription. For agencies, buying 3× Standard annual ($72/mo total) is often better than 1× Pro ($60/mo) for the same total fast hours across more users.
Team Cost Scenario
Team of 3, 12 months: Design agency with 3 designers generating client work. Need Stealth mode for privacy. Mix of Pro and Standard users.
| designers | 2 × Standard annual at $24/mo = $576/yr ($288/yr each) |
| lead Designer | 1 × Pro annual at $48/mo = $576/yr (Stealth mode for client work) |
| extra Fast Time | ~$50/mo average in extra GPU hours = $600/yr |
| Annual Total | $1,752/yr ($49/user/mo average) |
Overage & Usage Pricing
relax Mode
Free and unlimited on Standard, Pro, Mega. Not available on Basic
turbo Mode
2x faster generation at 2x the GPU time cost — effectively halves your fast hours
upscaling
Consumes additional fast GPU time beyond the initial generation
extra Fast Hours
~$4/hour purchased as add-on (billed per minute of GPU time)
video Generation
5-10x the GPU time of a still image per second of video
Recent Pricing Changes
2023-2026
Midjourney has kept its 4-tier pricing ($10/$30/$60/$120) stable since 2023. The free trial was removed in early 2023 after abuse.
The Mega plan was added in 2024 for high-volume users. V6 model (launched 2024) consumes more GPU time per image than V5, effectively reducing the number of images per fast hour.
Video generation (V6) was added in 2025 as an included feature but consumes fast hours at a significantly higher rate. No price increases to date, but effective cost-per-image has risen as models become more compute-intensive.
How Midjourney Compares to Competitors
DALL-E 3 via ChatGPT Plus ($20/mo) includes unlimited image generation alongside the full GPT-4o assistant. For users who need both text AI and image generation, ChatGPT Plus is better value — you get two tools for the price of Midjourney Standard. Image quality is close but Midjourney still leads on artistic coherence and photorealism. Adobe Firefly ($9.99/mo Standard) offers 2,000 credits and tight integration with Photoshop and Illustrator. Firefly is the safer commercial choice (Content Credentials, transparent training data) but produces less creative/artistic results than Midjourney. Best for designers already in the Adobe ecosystem. Stable Diffusion (free, open source) costs $0 to run locally with a decent GPU (RTX 3060+) or ~$0.01-0.05/image on cloud GPUs. Unbeatable on cost for high-volume generation, full control over models and training data. But requires technical setup and produces lower average quality without fine-tuning.
Ideogram (free tier + $7-20/mo plans) excels at text rendering in images — something Midjourney still struggles with. Better for logos, posters, and text-heavy designs. Worse for photorealism and artistic style.
