OpenIT is an open-source IT helpdesk solution designed for macOS and Windows that leverages AI, specifically Claude Code, to automate IT support tasks. It allows IT professionals to configure and manage their helpdesk using plain English instructions, rather than traditional click-based admin screens or proprietary workflow builders. The core idea is to shift configuration to code, giving IT teams full control and portability over their workflows. The application integrates directly with existing CLI tools, MCP servers, and allows for custom scripts in TypeScript, Python, and Bash. It operates locally on the desktop, enabling Claude to interact with system tools and files directly. For employees, OpenIT integrates seamlessly with Slack, allowing them to ask questions and receive automated answers or have tickets routed to IT staff without learning a new application. A key feature is its learning capability: when Claude encounters a new request, it escalates to an IT professional. Once resolved, Claude captures the solution and workflow, automating similar future requests and continuously building a knowledge base and automation library.
