OpenAI offers $5 free credit to new users, which is enough for experimentation. After that, you pay for what you use. There's no monthly subscription - you only pay for API calls made.
Both are excellent. OpenAI's GPT-4o excels at general tasks and has vision/image generation. Claude excels at longer context (200K tokens), coding, and nuanced writing. OpenAI has more models (DALL-E, Whisper), Claude has simpler pricing.
