What is Tether?
Tether is a Mac app that places a physics-driven ball on an elastic rope hanging from your menu bar. It's designed to give your hands something to do during long meetings, preventing you from reaching for your phone and losing focus. The ball interacts with your actual desktop windows as surfaces, rolling along edges, bouncing off windows, and dropping off ledges. You can drag, throw, cut the rope to let it roam freely, or use magnet mode to chase your cursor. With seven unique ball personalities, adjustable physics (gravity, bounce, size, rope tension), and support for multiple balls that collide with each other, Tether provides a silent, non-intrusive fidget experience. It never steals focus, clicks pass through except on the ball and rope, and a single shortcut (⌥F) hides it instantly. No account, telemetry, or cloud sync, your bounce count stays local on your Mac. It's a one-time purchase on the Mac App Store, requiring a recent version of macOS.

Tether gives your hands a physics-driven ball on an elastic rope to interact with, which provides a silent, non-intrusive fidget activity during long meetings. It prevents you from reaching for your phone and losing focus, while never stealing focus because clicks pass through except on the ball and rope. The ball rolls along desktop windows, bounces off them, and can be dragged, thrown, or cut loose.
How does Tether compare to Mac Pet as a desktop fidget?
Tether is a physics-driven ball on an elastic rope hanging from your menu bar, whereas Mac Pet is listed as one of its direct competitors in the desktop fidget space. Tether's defining features include adjustable physics, multiple colliding balls, magnet mode, and interaction with actual desktop windows as surfaces. It also emphasizes privacy with no account, telemetry, or cloud sync.
Which platforms does Tether support, and what are its main limitations?
Tether is only available for a recent version of macOS; there is no Windows or Linux support. Its utility is limited outside of meetings or fidgeting, as it is not a productivity tool per se. It is a paid product with no permanently free tier.
What kind of user benefits most from Tether?
Tether fits best for Mac users who spend long hours in meetings and need a harmless physical activity to keep their hands busy without losing focus. It is especially useful for people who tend to reach for their phone during calls and want a silent, non-intrusive fidget. Tether is not designed as a broad productivity tool, so its ideal user is someone seeking a meeting-focused distraction deterrent.
How is Tether priced?

Can Tether be hidden quickly during work?
Yes, Tether can be hidden instantly with a single shortcut, the Option+F key combination. It never steals focus, and clicks pass through except on the ball and rope. This makes it easy to disappear when you need to concentrate.
Does Tether collect any data or require an account?
No, Tether requires no account and collects no telemetry or cloud data. Your bounce count stays local on your Mac, and everything remains on your device. This makes it a privacy-first fidget app.
