The State of MCP 2026: What 228 Model Context Protocol Tools Reveal

First-party data on 228 Model Context Protocol tools in our catalog. MCP is a developer and AI-infrastructure story, nearly 85% ship a free tier, and adoption ramped from 2 tools in late 2025 to 132 added in Q3 2026 alone.

Key findings

What the data shows.

  1. 01

228 MCP tools now exist in our catalog, up from 2 in late 2025. MCP moved from a spec announcement to a populated tool category in under a year, with 132 tools added in Q3 2026 alone.

  2. 02

MCP is a developer and AI-infrastructure phenomenon, not a horizontal one. The four densest categories are Developer Tools (84 tools), AI Assistants (69), API Tools (56), and AI Agents (52). It has not yet spread to marketing, HR, or finance stacks.

  3. 03

MCP tools are 2.6x more likely to be free than the average B2B tool. 37% are fully free versus 14% catalog-wide. Only 15% are paid, against 45% across all 9,959 tools.

  4. 04

Nearly 85% of MCP tools ship a free tier. Free plus freemium accounts for 193 of 228 tools, because MCP servers are still an adoption play, not a revenue line.

  5. 05

The AI agent layer above MCP is far larger. Our AI Agents category holds 773 tools, so the interoperability layer (228 MCP tools) is still small relative to the agents that will consume it. Expect the gap to close.

Every AI client now speaks about "connecting to your tools," but almost nobody has counted what that ecosystem actually looks like. We did. We pulled every Model Context Protocol (MCP) tool in our catalog and analyzed who builds them, what they cost, and how fast the category is filling in. The short version: MCP is a developer and AI-infrastructure story, it is overwhelmingly free to try, and it went from a rounding error to 228 tools in under a year.

This report is a companion to our explainer MCP vs API: What's the Difference and When to Use Each. That piece covered the mechanics. This one covers the market.

Methodology

We identified MCP tools by matching "MCP" or "Model Context Protocol" across the name, tagline, and description of every published tool in the Toolradar catalog (9,959 tools across 401 categories as of August 4, 2026). Pricing model, category assignments, and metadata are extracted from each vendor's official site and re-verified weekly for the top tools by traffic. Adoption timing uses the date a tool entered our index, which tracks market emergence with a short lag rather than a vendor's exact launch date. Counts by category overlap because a tool can belong to several categories.

MCP is being built by and for developers

MCP adoption is concentrated where you would expect a protocol to land first: infrastructure. Developer Tools is the single densest category, and the top four are all technical.

The absence at the bottom of the stack is as telling as the density at the top. Marketing, HR, sales, and finance categories carry almost no MCP tools yet. MCP today is plumbing that developers wire into agents and assistants. The business-function tools that will eventually be reached through that plumbing have not shipped their own servers.

Almost nothing here costs money yet

The clearest signal in the data is price. MCP tools are dramatically cheaper than the catalog average, because most of them are distribution plays rather than products.

Pricing modelMCP toolsShareAll tools
Freemium10847%40%
Free8537%14%
Paid3515%45%

Read the free row twice. Across all 9,959 tools, 14% are fully free. Among MCP tools it is 37%, a 2.6x difference. Paid runs the other way: 45% of all tools charge, but only 15% of MCP tools do. Nearly 85% of MCP tools ship with a free tier of some kind.

This is what an early protocol ecosystem looks like. The people shipping MCP servers in 2026 are trying to get their tool into the agent's context window, not to bill for the server itself. Monetization sits one layer away, in the underlying product the server exposes.

The 2026 ramp

MCP barely existed in our index at the end of 2025. It filled in through 2026.

QuarterMCP tools added
Q4 20252
Q1 202676
Q2 202618
Q3 2026132

The Q3 2026 figure is the headline: 132 tools in a single quarter that is not yet finished at time of publication. The curve is not smooth, which is typical of a young category responding to client support milestones rather than steady demand. But the direction is unambiguous. MCP went from experiment to expectation in three quarters.

What it means for buyers

If you are choosing tools in 2026, three things follow from this data.

First, if a tool you rely on ships an MCP server, adopting it is nearly free to test. There is little pricing risk in wiring an MCP tool into Claude, Cursor, or any compatible client, because 85% of them have a free tier.

Second, the coverage gaps are real. If your workflow lives in marketing, HR, or finance, the MCP layer has not reached you yet. You will still integrate those tools through their REST APIs for now, which is exactly the tradeoff we benchmarked in MCP vs API.

Third, the direction of travel favors MCP for agent-driven work. With 773 tools already in our AI Agents category and only 228 MCP servers to feed them, demand for standardized tool access is running ahead of supply. That gap is where the next wave of tools will be built.
