How large the email marketing category is
Email marketing is a mid-size slice of the catalog. We track 105 published tools, or 1.0% of the 10,616 tools in the directory. That is smaller than CRM (495) and far smaller than analytics (1,254), which tells you something about the market: a handful of platforms do most of the sending, and a long tail of creator, ecommerce, and B2B specialists fight over the rest.
The tail is still growing. 84 of the 105 tools, 80% of the category, were added to Toolradar in 2026. "Added" here means added to our directory, not founded this year. A lot of those records are established products we indexed late. Even so, new names keep arriving because "email marketing" is less one product than three: a newsletter stack for writers, a lifecycle stack for stores, and a nurture stack for sales teams. Tools built for one of those jobs rarely win the other two.
How email marketing tools are priced
This category prices the opposite way to CRM. 58% of the 105 tools offer a free tier (51 freemium, 10 fully free). 42% are paid-only (40 paid, plus a handful of contact-sales and enterprise labels). If you want a CRM, you usually pay from day one. If you want to send email, someone will let you start at zero.
n = 105 tools, September 17, 2026How email marketing tools are priced
The free path is not charity. Email vendors make money when a list grows past the free-contact cap, so they compete on the landing and charge on the expansion. That is why the catalog-wide median entry price of $20 a month (software pricing statistics, 2,506 priced tools) is a weak guide here. The number that actually moves is the contact tier you will hit six months in, not the headline seat price.
Across the whole software catalog, 55% of tools offer some free access. Email marketing is in line with that average (58%) and far from CRM, where 73% of tools are paid-only. The practical implication: you can trial two or three email platforms without a card. You should, because switching lists later is the expensive part.
How email marketing tools are rated
Of the 105 tools, 77 carry an aggregate third-party rating (73% of the category). Those ratings rest on 147,074 reviews. The unweighted mean is 4.34 out of 5. The review-weighted mean is 4.31, pulled down by Mailchimp's volume at 3.90.
Rating distribution is not the interesting cut
The interesting cut is volume versus score.

The most-reviewed tools tell a different story:
| Tool | Rating | Reviews |
|---|---|---|
| Mailchimp | 3.90 | 31,997 |
| ActiveCampaign | 4.50 | 17,353 |
| HubSpot Marketing | 4.40 | 14,991 |
| Constant Contact | 4.20 | 10,413 |
| Brevo | 4.60 | 6,219 |

Mailchimp has roughly as many reviews as the next two names combined, and it scores a full point below the 4.80 cluster. That is not a rounding error. Broad tools that have been the default for a decade collect every kind of user, including people who outgrew them and never left. Specialists collect people who picked them on purpose. If your job matches Systeme.io or GMass or MailerLite, the ratings say you will be happier than the average Mailchimp seat. If you need the default because your team already lives there, the volume is the signal: people keep using it.

The channel still pays, on someone else's number
We do not run an email service, so we cannot publish open rates from this catalog. What we can do is put our first-party shape next to a checkable industry figure. Litmus, which tests how email renders, still publishes the $36-per-dollar return that email marketers quote: email drives an ROI of $36 for every dollar spent, higher than any other channel (Litmus, Email Marketing ROI). That number is a survey-backed benchmark, not a Toolradar measurement. Treat it as context for why this category stays crowded: the channel prints money when the list is real, which is why 105 vendors will fight over a list you already own.
What the ratings actually tell a buyer
Fit beats breadth on satisfaction, the same pattern we see in CRM. A tool built for one sending job, done for one kind of customer, outscores a horizontal platform that has to be everything. The shortlist still often starts with Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, or Brevo because of integrations and muscle memory. Check the best email marketing software ranking against the job you actually have (creator newsletter, store flows, B2B nurture) before you weigh a feature grid.
How this data was measured
Every first-party figure is computed from the Toolradar directory on September 17, 2026, covering the 105 published tools we categorize under Email Marketing. Pricing model (free, freemium, paid) is read from each vendor's official pricing page. Ratings and review counts are aggregated from third-party platforms (G2, Capterra, Trustpilot and others), not from Toolradar's own reviews. The leaderboard floor is 500 aggregated reviews so a thinly reviewed tool cannot headline. External statistics are cited inline and link to the exact source page. This is a directory snapshot, not a survey.
