Most write-ups of AI coding tools are a ranked list of five names and a launch-week price. This is the wider picture. Toolradar tracks 153 AI coding assistants, and the single fact that defines the category is access: 89% of them offer a free tier or a freemium plan, and when you do pay, the median plan starts at just $20 a month. Cheap, or free, is the entry point for almost every tool in this space, which is why the real decision has nothing to do with price.
The numbers below are computed live from the Toolradar directory on September 17, 2026. They cover how the category is priced, how the 51 rated tools score across G2, Capterra, Trustpilot and other third-party platforms, how fast the category is growing, how our first-party data lines up against the adoption figures the big developer surveys published this year, and what all of it means if you are actually choosing a tool.
How large the category is, and how fast it grew
The AI coding category holds 153 published tools, or 1.4% of the 10,619 tools in the Toolradar directory. That share understates its momentum. 131 of the 153 tools, or 86%, were added to the directory in 2026 alone. Very few categories we track turn over that fast; most established software segments add a single-digit percentage of new entrants in a year. AI coding added the majority of its current roster inside nine months.
Attention tracks the intake. Our media-mention tracker records 1,078 press mentions for tools in this category, 364 of them in the last 90 days. A category generating hundreds of press hits a quarter is not a niche; it is where the software conversation is happening, and it is where new entrants keep believing there is room for one more editor plug-in, one more autonomous agent, one more code-review bot.
The external surveys explain the pull. In the Stack Overflow 2025 Developer Survey, 84% of developers said they use or plan to use AI tools in their workflow, up from 76% in 2024. Google's 2025 DORA report puts practitioner adoption even higher, at 90% of software professionals, a 14-point jump in a year, with a median of two hours a day spent working alongside AI. On the supply side, GitHub's Octoverse 2024 counted more than 70,000 new public generative-AI projects created in 2024 and a 98% rise in the number of such projects on the platform. Demand and supply are both compounding, which is why our own intake rate looks the way it does. When nearly every working developer is a customer and the tooling to build a new assistant is itself an AI assistant, the category grows on both ends at once.

Pricing is the clearest signal in the category, and it points one way: down. 89% of the 153 tools offer a free path to use them. Broken out, 71% are freemium (109 tools) and 18% are fully free (27 tools, including open-source projects). Only 11% (17 tools) charge from the first day.

For the 45 tools that publish a paid tier with a real monthly price, the median entry price is $20 a month. The mean is higher, at $41, pulled up by a thin tail of team and enterprise plans. When almost every tool has a free tier and the median paid plan is $20, the category is competing on distribution and lock-in, not on list price. Vendors give the product away because the goal is to sit inside your editor and your workflow before a purchasing decision is ever made; the paid tier is a formality once the tool is load-bearing.

There is an economic reason the free tiers are this generous even though inference costs the vendor real money on every request. The bet is land-and-expand: get a developer hooked on completions and chat inside a free tier, then convert them, or their employer, to a seat license once the tool is indispensable. The category is effectively subsidizing evaluation. For a buyer, that subsidy is a gift. You can run a real trial on real code for weeks without spending anything, which is not true in most software categories.
Why price is not the deciding factor
Because free tiers are generous and the paid step-up is small, price should be near the bottom of your evaluation checklist. The variables that actually separate these tools are model quality (which underlying model powers completions and how quickly the vendor adopts new ones), context handling (how much of your codebase the tool can see and reason over), editor and terminal integration, and how the tool behaves on large or unusual repositories. A tool that is free but wrong wastes more of your time than a paid one that is right, because every suggestion has to be reviewed.
That review burden is the other half of the story, and the surveys quantify it. Even as adoption hit record highs, the Stack Overflow 2025 survey found 45.7% of developers distrust the accuracy of AI output, up sharply from the prior year. Adoption is running ahead of trust. The practical reading is that these tools are being used as fast assistants that a human still checks, not as autonomous replacements, and that the winning tool in your stack is the one whose output you have to correct least, not the one with the lowest sticker price.
How AI coding assistants are rated
Of the 153 tools in the category, 51 carry an aggregate third-party rating (33% of the category), built from 6,204 reviews across G2, Capterra, Trustpilot and similar platforms. The unweighted mean rating is 4.33 out of 5, and the review-weighted mean is 4.11, so the larger, more-reviewed products are not dragging the average down. This is a well-liked category, which is what you would expect when users self-select onto free tiers and only the ones who find value stick around to review.

Ratings cluster tightly at the top, which makes review volume the more useful tiebreaker: a 4.6 on a few hundred reviews is a different claim than a 4.6 on a few thousand. Here is where the reviews actually sit by platform:

One caveat on reading this leaderboard: because the category is young and cross-tagged, some entries are broad AI platforms that developers also use for coding rather than pure coding tools. Treat the ranking as a satisfaction signal, not a like-for-like feature comparison. If you want to start with the names buyers reach for most often, three worth a look are Cursor, the Claude Code command-line assistant, and Gemini CLI. The companies and the labor market behind the tools
The builders in this category are among the best-funded in software. Our funding tracker records disclosed venture rounds for 7 of the companies behind these tools, and the list is topped by the frontier labs whose assistants we list: OpenAI raised roughly $40 billion in 2025, and Anthropic closed a $13 billion Series F in September 2025. Capital at that scale is unusual for a category whose median product sells for $20 a month, and it is the clearest sign that vendors expect to monetize adoption later rather than list price now. It also means the underlying models these tools depend on are backed by balance sheets that can absorb years of subsidized inference, which is part of why the free tiers stay generous.
The demand side is durable too. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of software developers to grow 10% from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the average for all occupations, with about 106,100 openings a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). Despite the loud debate about AI replacing programmers, the official projection is for the developer workforce to keep expanding through the next decade. AI assistants are being adopted into a growing profession, not a shrinking one, which supports the vendors' bet that today's free users become tomorrow's paying seats.
How often pricing moves
AI coding pricing is not set-and-forget. Our pricing-verification tracker logged 8 pricing changes for tools in this category in 2026. Usage-based model costs, new "pro" tiers, and repackaged free limits all move faster here than in mature software categories, because the vendors' own costs move with each new model generation and because competition forces constant repackaging. This is exactly why we re-verify each tool's pricing page on a rotating schedule rather than trusting a one-time scrape. If you are budgeting for one of these tools, assume the tier you evaluate today may look different in a quarter, and read the usage limits, not just the headline price, because that is where most of the real changes happen.
How this data was measured
Every figure in this report is computed live from the Toolradar directory on September 17, 2026, covering the 153 published tools we categorize under AI coding. Pricing model (free, freemium, paid) is read from each vendor's official pricing page and re-verified on a rotating schedule. The entry price is the cheapest positive monthly tier a tool publishes; tools that quote only "contact sales" are counted in the model split but excluded from the price median so an enterprise-only quote cannot distort it. Ratings and review counts are aggregated from third-party platforms (G2, Capterra, Trustpilot and others) stored per tool, not from Toolradar's own review feature, which is negligible by comparison. The leaderboard floor is 100 aggregated reviews. Media mentions come from our press tracker; the 90-day window is relative to September 17, 2026. Funding is drawn from our funding-round tracker, which records disclosed rounds only. External statistics are cited inline and link to the exact source page. This is a directory snapshot, not a survey, and it reflects vendor-published information at a point in time.
