How large the e-signature category is

We track 54 published e-signature tools, or 0.5% of the 10,616-tool directory. That is a small category by headcount and a dense one by reviews: 84,987 opinions on 45 rated products, about 1,890 reviews per rated tool. CRM has more tools (495) and more reviews (333,710), but it also has a much longer tail of thinly reviewed vertical products. E-signature is shorter and thicker. Most names in the set have been used enough for the score to mean something.

47 of the 54 tools, 87% of the category, were added to the directory in 2026. Again, that is an index date, not a founding date. The core feature (send a document, collect a legally valid signature, store the packet) commoditized years ago. What keeps arriving are cheaper envelope plans, API-first twins, and tools that bolted signing onto a form builder or a PDF editor.

How e-signature tools are priced

The split is almost even. 25 of 54 tools (46%) offer a free path (23 freemium, 2 fully free). 28 (52%) are paid-only. One is custom.

The pricing fight in this category is envelopes, not seats. Entry plans often cap sends per user per month, then the vendor tries to walk you into an "agreement cloud" that costs like a CLM suite. That is why a 4.90 specialist can win a shortlist against a 4.60 incumbent: if you only need signatures, you are overpaying for a platform that wants to own the contract after the ink.

Across the whole catalog the median paid entry price is $20 a month (software pricing statistics). Use that as a ceiling check, not a quote. The number that matters is the envelope cap on the plan you will actually run.

How e-signature tools are rated

45 of 54 tools carry a rating (83% of the category), on 84,987 reviews. Unweighted mean 4.52. Review-weighted mean 4.57. Weighted is higher than unweighted, which is unusual. In most categories volume drags the average down because the giants collect unhappy seats. Here the high-volume names still score in the mid-4.6s, so the weight lifts the mean.

DocuSign is still the name people mean when they say "send me a DocuSign." It also has the most reviews and a solid 4.60. It does not have the happiest users. SignWell and eversign do, on enough reviews that the score is not a toy sample. Jotform showing up on both lists is the form-builder overlap: a lot of teams collect a signature as a step in a form, not as a standalone product.

Trustpilot's 8,365 reviews sit on only four profiles. That is a consumer-shaped slice (PDF utilities, not enterprise CLM) and it is why we always show the platform split: one channel can tilt a category if you hide it.
