Is Nodus Research worth the price?
Nodus is a $0 research desktop.
The only money you spend is an optional LLM API or the electricity for a local model. That is the right shape if you already live in Zotero and want cited answers over your PDFs.
It is the wrong shape if you want a hosted team workspace like Notion. Compare it to Obsidian/Logseq (notes) plus a Zotero plugin, not to a SaaS tutor.
Hidden Costs & Gotchas
Cloud LLM tokens if you turn on OpenAI/Anthropic/etc.
You maintain backups of the local vault.
AGPL 4.x may matter if you embed Nodus in a closed product.
How Nodus Research Compares to Competitors
Obsidian, Logseq, and Roam are PKM graphs. Notion is a hosted workspace. Readwise and RemNote lean highlights and spaced repetition. Nodus is the Zotero-native, citation-first research layer.
