Cheaper Gumroad Alternatives in 2026

TL;DR

Short answer: Lemon Squeezy and Paddle are the cheapest Gumroad alternatives for 500 sales a year of a $29 product. Each takes 5% plus 50¢ a sale with no monthly fee, so the year costs $975 against Gumroad's $1,700. Payhip Plus, at $1,208.50 once card processing is counted, is the cheapest option that keeps a monthly fee. Podia's Mover plan, which adds a 5% fee, costs more than Gumroad at this volume.

Eight Gumroad alternatives costed on the same yearly sales, with plan prices and fee rates taken from each vendor's own pricing page

40 Creator Platforms tools tracked

Lemon Squeezy and Paddle take 5% plus 50¢ a sale, against Gumroad's 10% plus 50¢. On 500 sales a year that gap is $725, and Lemon Squeezy and Paddle stay cheaper at every volume because the 50¢ fixed fee is the same for all three. Plan-based tools work differently. Sellfy, SendOwl, SamCart and Podia charge a monthly plan, then leave card processing to the payment processor, so their bill depends on the plan and, for Sellfy and SendOwl, on the yearly sales cap that plan carries.

Toolradar data: 60% of the 40 creator platforms we track offer a free or freemium plan, and 40% are paid-only. A free plan rarely decides what a seller pays. The per-sale fee or the monthly plan does.

Methodology: one seller, one product at $29, and 500 sales a year, which is $14,500 of gross revenue. Each tool is priced on the plan that covers that volume, at the billing term its pricing page shows first. Where a tool leaves the processor to charge on top, we add 2.9% plus 30¢, the rate Podia and Sellfy publish, which is $570.50 a year at this volume. Prices checked on 12 October 2026 on each vendor's own pricing page. This guide covers sales of downloads, licenses and memberships. Other Creator Platforms worth considering

More published tools from our Creator Platforms category, ordered by our category ranking. They are not part of the editorial picks above.

What each tool takes from a sale

Gumroad takes 10% of each direct sale plus 50¢, and 30% of a sale that its Discover marketplace brings in. It charges no monthly fee. The alternatives bill in three ways: a per-sale fee, a monthly plan, or a share of membership income. Lemon Squeezy and Paddle are merchants of record: they take one per-sale fee and handle sales tax on each order.

Sellfy, SendOwl, SamCart and Podia charge a monthly plan and leave card processing to the processor. Payhip offers both the per-sale and the monthly-plan model, with a per-sale fee on its free plan and a lower fee on its paid plans. Patreon is a membership platform that takes 10% of income, so its fee works differently from a per-sale rate. For a head-to-head view, see Gumroad vs Lemon Squeezy, or the Gumroad alternatives page.

Why the monthly fee can mislead

A tool with no transaction fee is not automatically the cheapest. Sellfy's Business plan takes no transaction fee and costs $708 a year, but card processing adds $570.50 at this volume, so the year totals $1,278.50. That is $421.50 less than Gumroad and $303.50 more than Lemon Squeezy.

Volume changes the ranking as well. Gumroad has no monthly charge, so it is cheap at low volume, and Lemon Squeezy and Paddle undercut it at every volume because their rate stays at 5% whatever the volume. At 50 sales a year, the product brings in $1,450, and Gumroad takes $170 of it. Sellfy's Starter plan costs $264 a year before processing, about $321 with it, so the monthly plan costs more than Gumroad at that size. Starter overtakes Gumroad at about $3,400 a year in sales, and it stops at a $10,000 cap.

Gumroad's Discover marketplace adds a second trap. A sale that Discover brings in is charged 30%, which is three times the 10% base rate, so a seller who depends on the marketplace pays far more per sale than the headline rate suggests.

Key Features to Look For

  • Merchant of record and sales tax (Essential)

Gumroad, Lemon Squeezy and Paddle each describe themselves as merchant of record, which means they collect and remit sales tax on each order. Podia lists sales tax in 230 countries among the features every plan includes. Check the tax setup on Sellfy, SendOwl, SamCart, Payhip and Patreon, because their pricing pages do not describe it.

  • Yearly sales cap (Essential)

Sellfy and SendOwl price their plans by yearly sales. Sellfy's Starter stops at $10,000 a year and Business at $50,000. SendOwl's Launch and Grow plans have caps too, with Grow stopping at $36,000. A seller who passes a cap has to move to the next plan.

  • Card processing on top (Essential)

Podia and Sellfy publish 2.9% plus 30¢ for card processing on top of their plans, SamCart lists the same rate, and Payhip says PayPal and Stripe charge their standard rates on every plan. Count that line in the total. At 500 sales it adds $570.50 a year.

  • Bandwidth overage (Important)

SendOwl charges $1 per GB of downloads above the monthly allowance on each plan. A seller with large files, such as video or software, should check the allowance against the file sizes before choosing a plan.

  • Email list limits (Important)

Podia caps email subscribers at 100 on Mover, 500 on Shaker and 1,000 on Earthquaker. Lemon Squeezy offers email marketing free up to 500 subscribers. Count the list you expect to reach in the next year, not the list you have today.

  • Product and file limits (Important)

Podia's Mover plan allows 50 products and Shaker allows 150. A seller with a larger catalog of templates or ebooks needs Shaker or a higher plan, so check the product count before you pay for a plan.

  • Free plan for testing (Nice to have)

Payhip's free plan costs $0 a month and takes 5% a sale. Lemon Squeezy is free to start but has no trial period. Patreon is free to start and charges only once a creator earns.

What to check before you leave Gumroad

  1. Multiply the per-sale fee by your yearly sales, not by one product price. At this volume, a 5% fee comes to $725.

  2. Add card processing wherever a tool is not a merchant of record, then compare totals rather than headline rates.

  3. Check the yearly sales cap on the plan you pick, and the price of the next plan up, in case a good year passes it.

  4. Confirm who collects sales tax on each order. Gumroad, Lemon Squeezy and Paddle describe themselves as merchant of record on their pricing pages, so check the terms of any other tool before you launch.

Evaluation Checklist

  • Multiply each tool's per-sale fee by your yearly sales, then add the monthly plan and the processor's charge.

  • Confirm whether the tool is a merchant of record, which decides who collects and remits sales tax.

  • Check the yearly sales cap on your plan, and the price of the next plan up, before a good year forces an upgrade.

  • Run one purchase through the checkout yourself before you send traffic to it, and check the buyer's receipt.

  • Compare the download allowance with the size of your largest file, especially if the tool bills bandwidth overages.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • ×

Comparing a monthly plan with a per-sale fee at one volume. The ranking flips with sales: Sellfy's Starter beats Gumroad only from about $3,400 a year.

  • ×

Forgetting the processor. Podia, Sellfy and SamCart each bill card processing on top of the plan, which adds more than half of each plan's price at this volume.

  • ×

Missing the sales cap. Sellfy Starter and SendOwl Launch both stop at $10,000 a year, and a good year can force an upgrade mid-season.

  • ×

Ignoring bandwidth. SendOwl charges $1 per GB above each plan's monthly allowance, which adds up on large files.

Expert Tips

  • →

Model three volumes before choosing, such as 50, 500 and 5,000 sales, because the cheapest tool changes with volume.

  • →

Lemon Squeezy and Paddle undercut Gumroad at every volume, since their fee is 5% rather than 10%. They are the default for per-sale pricing.

  • →

Use a free plan to test a first product, then move to a paid plan once the first sales are in.

  • →

Price memberships separately. A subscription business and a one-off download seller can bring in the same yearly total and still pay very different fees.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • A monthly plan with a sales cap that a good year can pass within a few months.

  • A fee quoted without a figure, such as a payment charge that says only that it varies.

  • A pricing page that does not state the processor's charge next to the plan price.

  • No written statement on who collects sales tax on each order.

The Bottom Line

For 500 sales a year, Lemon Squeezy and Paddle cost the least, at a rate that undercuts Gumroad at every volume. Payhip Plus and Sellfy Business come next once card processing is counted, and they suit a seller who wants a monthly plan with more control. Patreon fits memberships, but its 10% fee alone is most of Gumroad's total before processing, so it does not beat Gumroad at this volume unless processing stays under $250.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest Gumroad alternative?

For 500 sales a year, Lemon Squeezy and Paddle are the cheapest at $975 a year. Both charge 5% plus 50¢ a sale with no monthly fee, against Gumroad's $1,700 on the same sales.

How much does Gumroad cost in fees?

Gumroad charges 10% plus 50¢ on each direct sale and 30% on a sale that comes through its Discover marketplace. At 500 sales a year, direct sales cost $1,450 plus $250, or $1,700, with no monthly fee.

Is there a free Gumroad alternative?

Payhip has a free plan that costs $0 a month and takes 5% a sale. Counting card processing, that comes to $1,295.50 a year at this volume, still below Gumroad. Lemon Squeezy is free to start, though it has no trial period.

Is Podia cheaper than Gumroad?

Only on its Shaker plan. Shaker costs $84 a month billed yearly with no transaction fee, so 500 sales cost $1,578.50 with processing. The Mover plan adds a 5% fee and costs $1,799.50 at the same volume, which is more than Gumroad.

When does a monthly plan beat Gumroad?

Sellfy's Starter plan costs $22 a month billed yearly and charges no transaction fee, so it beats Gumroad from about $3,400 a year in sales, until its cap. At 50 sales a year it costs about $321 with processing, against $170 on Gumroad.

Does Patreon work for selling downloads?

Patreon is built around memberships and subscriptions. It takes 10% of income and lists payment processing and payout fees on top without figures. At this volume the 10% alone is most of Gumroad's bill, so processing would have to cost under $250 for Patreon to beat Gumroad.
