How AI Agents Choose Software (And Why They Get It Wrong)

AI assistants confidently recommend software with wrong prices, discontinued products, and missing alternatives. Here is why it happens and how MCP fixes it.

Ask Claude or ChatGPT "What does Slack cost?" and you will get an answer that sounds authoritative. It will probably say something like "$6.67 per user per month for the Pro plan" or "$12.50 per user per month for Business+." Both numbers are wrong.

Slack Pro actually costs $7.25/user/month (annual) as of March 2026. Business+ jumped from $12.50 to $15/user/month in June 2025 when Slack bundled advanced AI features into the tier. An LLM trained on 2024 data has no way to know this. It will quote the old price with complete confidence and zero disclaimers.

This is not a hypothetical edge case. It is the default behavior of every AI assistant making software recommendations today. And it gets worse than stale pricing.

The Three Ways AI Gets Software Wrong

1. Stale Training Data

LLMs are trained on web snapshots that are 6 to 18 months old by the time you use them. Software pricing changes constantly.

Real examples of what goes wrong:

  • Notion pricing restructured in May 2025. The AI add-on ($8/user/month) was eliminated. AI features moved exclusively into Business ($18/user/month annual) and Enterprise tiers. An LLM trained before this change will tell you Notion AI costs $8/user/month as an add-on to any plan. That option no longer exists.

  • Heroku killed its free tier in November 2022. Over three years ago. Yet LLMs trained on older web content -- Stack Overflow answers, tutorials, blog posts from 2020-2022 -- still occasionally recommend "deploy to Heroku's free tier" for hobby projects. The cheapest Heroku option is now $5/month for Eco dynos.

  • Adobe XD was discontinued in 2024. Adobe stopped selling it as a standalone product and put it in maintenance mode after the failed Figma acquisition. An AI that recommends "use Adobe XD for prototyping" is sending you to a dead product. Figma won that market. Figma Professional costs $12/editor/month (annual) in 2026.

  • Zapier restructured pricing in April 2024. The Professional plan changed from $19.99/month for 750 tasks to a pay-per-task overage model. Filters, formatters, and paths no longer count as tasks. An LLM that memorized pre-2024 Zapier pricing will give you math that is fundamentally wrong for capacity planning.

The problem is not that LLMs are stupid. The problem is that software pricing is one of the fastest-changing data types on the internet, and training data cannot keep up.

2. No Structured Comparison Framework

When you ask an LLM "What's the best project management tool?", it has no scoring rubric. It is pattern-matching against blog posts, Reddit threads, and marketing pages it saw during training. The result is a popularity contest, not analysis.

The typical AI response lists Asana, Jira, Trello, Monday.com, and ClickUp -- the same five tools that dominate SEO rankings. It will not mention Linear (which developers consistently rate higher for engineering workflows) or newer entrants that launched after its training cutoff.

Worse, the AI has no framework for comparing them. It cannot tell you:

  • Which one scores highest on independent editorial review
  • Which one has the best price-to-feature ratio
  • Which one actual users rate highest for specific use cases
  • Which tools are genuine direct competitors vs. just sharing a broad category

It guesses. Confidently.

3. No Pricing Verification

This is the most dangerous failure mode. An LLM cannot visit a pricing page. It cannot check whether a free tier still exists. It cannot verify whether the "Enterprise" plan it is describing has the features it claims.

When Slack renamed "Enterprise Grid" to "Enterprise+" in August 2024 and restructured the tier, LLMs had no mechanism to learn this. They will confidently describe a plan structure that no longer exists.

When Notion moved from "Personal Pro" to "Plus" as a plan name, LLMs trained on old data use the wrong name -- which matters when a user is trying to find the right plan on Notion's actual website.

The core issue: LLMs treat software facts as static when they are dynamic. Pricing pages change quarterly. Products get acquired, sunset, or restructured. Free tiers appear and disappear. None of this reaches the model until the next training run, months later.

What Actually Goes Wrong in Practice

Here are failure patterns we see repeatedly when developers rely on AI for software decisions:

The Discontinued Tool Problem. An AI recommends a tool that no longer exists or is in maintenance mode. Beyond Adobe XD, this happens with niche tools constantly. Products get acqui-hired, pivot, or shut down. The AI's training data preserves them in amber, recommending them months after they have gone dark.

The Phantom Free Tier. The AI says a tool has a free plan when the vendor eliminated it. Heroku is the canonical example, but it happens across SaaS. Many tools that offered generous free tiers in 2021-2022 pulled them back as venture funding tightened. The AI still recommends the free version because thousands of web pages say it exists.

The Price Anchoring Error. The AI quotes an old price, the user builds a budget around it, and discovers the actual cost is 20-40% higher at procurement time. This is not a rounding error. Slack Business+ went from $12.50 to $15/user/month -- a 20% increase. For a 100-person team, that is $3,000/year the AI did not account for.

The Missing Alternative. The AI recommends established incumbents because they dominate its training data. Tools that launched in 2025 or gained traction recently are invisible. This is anti-competitive by accident: the AI systematically favors tools with the most web presence, not the most relevant ones.

Scenario: "Find me a Jira alternative for a 20-person engineering team"

Without MCP (training data only):

"Consider Asana, Trello, Monday.com, ClickUp, or Linear. Asana starts at $10.99/user/month, Trello has a free tier, and Linear is $8/user/month."

Problems:

  • Asana's actual Starter price is $10.99/user/month (this happens to be correct, but the AI is guessing)
  • Lists Trello as an alternative when Trello is a kanban board, not an engineering project tracker
  • No mention of editorial quality or user satisfaction
  • Missing newer alternatives that launched post-training

When to Use It
