What is QuietHint®?

QuietHint is a macOS desktop app that transcribes your calls on-device and provides real-time suggested replies when a question comes up. It listens to your Mac's audio, both your microphone and the system audio, so no bot joins the call and no plugin is needed. The transcript is labeled by speaker (You or Them) and can optionally include screen context. Audio never leaves your machine; only the recent transcript text is sent to an advanced LLM's API (via your own key) when generating a hint. QuietHint runs in a floating overlay that never takes focus, and you can trigger hints automatically or manually with ⌘↩. It works with Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Slack, Discord, Webex, and any other app that produces audio on your Mac. No account or sign-up required; just download, add an API key, and press Listen. Offers a free tier for limited suggestions; paid plans are available for unlimited use.

Key Features

  • On-device speech-to-text transcription using a local model
  • Labels each line as You or Them by separating microphone and system audio channels
  • Generates a suggested reply with key supporting points when a question is detected
  • Auto mode watches for questions and shows hints; manual mode triggered by ⌘↩
  • Optional screen context: shares a screenshot with the transcript for more relevant hints (off by default)
  • No account, telemetry, or sign-up; uses your own API key stored in macOS Keychain

Is QuietHint® worth the price?

Good value

QuietHint's pricing is generous and well-structured, especially the Pro yearly launch at $79/year ($6.58/month) and Lifetime at $199 once, which undercut most subscription-based competitors.

The Free tier offers a risk-free trial with 10 suggestions per call, but requires your own Anthropic API key and payment. Best for macOS users who want affordable, privacy-focused real-time call assistance.

QuietHint® FAQ

How does QuietHint keep my audio private?

QuietHint processes all audio locally on your Mac using an on-device speech model. No audio is uploaded, recorded to disk, or sent anywhere. Only the recent transcript text, and a screenshot if Screen mode is on, is sent to Anthropic's API via your own API key when generating a hint.

Does QuietHint require installing a plugin or bot in the meeting?

No. QuietHint listens to the audio on your Mac (microphone and system audio) without joining the call. No plugin, bot, or extension is installed in the meeting, so the other participants never know it's being used.

Can QuietHint be used with any video conferencing app?

Yes. QuietHint works with any app that produces audio on your Mac, including Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Slack, Discord, Webex, and others. It is not affiliated with or integrated into any of them; it simply captures the sound that your Mac plays.

How does the hint feature decide when to suggest a reply?

In Auto mode, QuietHint watches the transcript for question-like patterns and automatically shows a suggested reply in the overlay. You can also turn off Auto mode and manually trigger a hint anytime with ⌘↩. The hint is generated based on the recent transcript and, if enabled, a screenshot of your screen.

What does enabling Screen mode do?

When Screen mode is turned on, QuietHint captures a screenshot of your screen and sends it along with the recent transcript when generating a hint. This allows the AI to consider shared dashboards, error messages, slides, or other visual content for more contextually relevant suggestions. Screen mode is off by default and has a visible toggle in the overlay.

Do I need an internet connection to use QuietHint?

Yes, an internet connection is required when generating a hint because the transcript text (and optionally a screenshot) is sent to Anthropic's API for processing. However, the transcription step itself runs entirely on your device without internet.

How does QuietHint label who said what in the transcript?

QuietHint separates your microphone audio from the system audio (the call's audio). By processing each channel independently, it can tag every line as You (your microphone) or Them (the call audio). This ensures hints always respond to what the other side said, not your own words.

What happens if I run out of free suggestions?

The free tier includes ten suggestions. After that, you'll need to purchase a paid plan to continue using hints. The app will likely stop generating new hints until a plan is selected. Transcript display and other features may continue to work depending on the plan.
