Customer support is a pay-from-day-one category with a satisfaction split the incumbents do not win. Toolradar tracks 255 customer support tools, and together they hold 229,994 aggregated third-party reviews. Across the 205 tools that carry a rating, the average is 4.42 out of 5. 68% of the category is paid-only. HubSpot Service sits at 3.40 from 9,419 reviews. Retell AI, AfterShip, and Textline all sit at 4.80. That gap is the story: the default help desk owns the review pile, and the specialists own the score.
Every figure below is computed from the Toolradar directory on September 17, 2026. The live dashboard for the same cut is customer support statistics. The buyer-facing ranking is best customer support software.
How large the customer support category is
Customer support is a mid-size slice of the catalog. We track 255 published tools, or 2.4% of the 10,619 tools in the directory. 91% of them (232 of 255) were added to Toolradar in 2026. "Added" means added to our directory, not founded this year. A lot of those records are established desks we indexed late. The category still keeps growing because "customer support" is several jobs under one label: a ticket queue, a shared inbox, a voice agent, a shipping tracker, a waitlist. Tools built for one of those jobs rarely win the others.
The review pile is concentrated. Salesforce, Zendesk, Zendesk for E-commerce, Zoho Desk, and HubSpot Service account for a large share of the 229,994 reviews. The long tail is where the 4.80 scores live.
How customer support tools are priced
This category prices like CRM, not like email. 68% of the 255 tools are paid-only. 32% offer a free tier or freemium plan (81 tools), and only 3% are fully free. If you want a real desk, expect to pay from the start.
n = 255 tools, September 17, 2026How customer support software are priced
For the 74 tools that publish a paid tier, the median entry price is $29 a month and the mean is $70. The mean is pulled up by enterprise suites. The number that actually moves is the agent seat you will hit when the queue is real, not the headline starter tier.
n = 74 tools with a published paid tierEntry price distribution
Across the whole software catalog, 55% of tools offer some free access (software pricing statistics). Customer support sits well below that average. The practical implication: you can rarely trial three desks without a card. Switching later means moving the ticket history, the macros, and the team habits. Budget for the tier that includes the channel you actually run.
How customer support tools are rated
Of the 255 tools, 205 carry an aggregate third-party rating (80% of the category). Those ratings rest on 229,994 reviews. The unweighted mean is 4.42. The review-weighted mean is 4.33, pulled down by the big suites.

The interesting cut is volume versus score. The most-reviewed names on September 17, 2026:
| Tool | Rating | Reviews |
|---|---|---|
| Salesforce | 4.40 | 44,685 |
| Zendesk for E-commerce | 4.30 | 11,487 |
| Zendesk | 4.30 | 11,165 |
| Zoho Desk | 4.40 | 10,148 |
| HubSpot Service | 3.40 | 9,419 |
Source: Toolradar directory, September 17, 2026.
HubSpot Service has nearly as many reviews as Zoho Desk and scores a full point lower. That is not a rounding error. Broad platforms that became the default collect every kind of user, including people who outgrew them and never left. Voice and messaging specialists collect people who picked them on purpose.
The highest-rated tools with at least 400 aggregated reviews:
| # | Tool | Rating | Reviews |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Retell AI | 4.80 | 1,472 |
| 2 | Aftership | 4.80 | 784 |
| 3 | Textline | 4.80 | 553 |
| 4 | Respond.io | 4.80 | 464 |
| 5 | Waitwhile | 4.80 | 408 |
| 6 | NinjaOne | 4.70 | 3,747 |
| 7 | Quo | 4.70 | 3,412 |
| 8 | Smartsupp | 4.70 | 1,419 |
| 9 | Splashtop | 4.70 | 1,254 |
| 10 | Document360 | 4.70 | 834 |
Retell AI leads at 4.80. If your job matches a specialist, the ratings say you will be happier than the average HubSpot Service seat. If you need the default because the rest of the company already lives there, the volume is the signal: people keep using it.
Review volume by platform:
| Review platform | Tools with a profile | Aggregated reviews | Mean rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| G2 | 200 | 158,737 | 4.44 |
| Capterra | 94 | 60,043 | 4.45 |
| Trustpilot | 15 | 8,956 | 3.67 |
| SourceForge | 32 | 1,751 | 3.71 |
| TrustRadius | 6 | 495 | 4.31 |
| Peerspot | 4 | 12 | 3.86 |
Three widely used tools worth comparing are Zendesk, Zoho Desk, and Retell AI. The full ranked set is on our best customer support software page.
What buyers say they will leave over
The first-party split matters more once you put it next to what CX leaders report. Zendesk's 2026 CX Trends study, based on more than 11,000 consumers and business leaders across 22 countries, found that 85% of CX leaders say one unresolved issue is enough to lose a customer. 74% of consumers get frustrated when they have to repeat information. 95% of consumers expect a clear explanation for an AI-made decision (Zendesk).
Those are not Toolradar numbers. They are the demand side of the same market. A 3.40 help desk with 9,000 reviews is a warning if your queue already loses people on the first unresolved ticket. A 4.80 specialist is a better fit only if it covers the channel you actually run.
How often support pricing moves
Our pricing tracker logged 12 pricing changes for these tools in 2026, 0 of them applied. Support vendors move seats and AI add-ons more often than the sticker suggests. Recheck the tier you will actually staff, not the page you bookmarked last year.
How this data was measured
Every figure in this report is computed live from the Toolradar directory on September 17, 2026, covering the 255 published tools we categorize under Customer Support. Pricing model is read from each vendor's official pricing page. The entry price is the cheapest positive monthly tier a tool publishes. Ratings and review counts are aggregated from third-party platforms (G2, Capterra, Trustpilot and others), not from Toolradar's own reviews. The leaderboard floor is 400 aggregated reviews. External statistics are cited inline and link to the exact source page. This is a directory snapshot, not a survey.
