Communication is the most-reviewed software category in this research wave, and the score does not match the volume. Toolradar tracks 256 communication tools holding 441,061 aggregated third-party reviews. That is more review mass than email marketing, customer support, or ecommerce. The unweighted average is 4.34 out of 5. The review-weighted average falls to 4.02, pulled down by Zoom at 3.40 from 56,859 reviews and Gmail at 3.40 from 47,203. Slack holds 64,990 reviews at 4.20. Microsoft Teams holds 30,473 at 4.40. The products everyone already uses are not the ones people like most.

Every figure below is computed from the Toolradar directory on September 17, 2026. The live dashboard is communication statistics. The buyer ranking is best communication software.

How large the communication category is

We track 256 published tools, or 2.4% of the 10,619 tools in the directory. 88% (226 of 256) were added to Toolradar in 2026. The category looks small until you look at the reviews. Five household names, Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, Gmail, and Microsoft Teams, hold most of the 441,061 opinions. The remaining 250 tools are the long tail of team chat, SMS, school comms, and open-source alternatives.

That shape is why a star rating in this category is easy to misread. A 4.80 from a few hundred reviews is a different signal from a 3.40 from fifty thousand. Both are real. They answer different questions.

How communication tools are priced

55% of the 256 tools offer a free tier or freemium plan (140 tools). 45% are paid-only. This is closer to email marketing than to CRM. Chat and video vendors compete on the landing and charge when the workspace fills up.

For the 67 tools that publish a paid tier, the median entry price is $15 a month and the mean is $24. Those are seat prices, not workspace prices. A 20-person team on Slack or Teams is not paying $15. It is paying $15 times the seats that actually log in.

The catalog-wide median entry price is $20 a month (software pricing statistics). Communication undercuts that at the headline tier and overtakes it once you count seats. Treat the sticker as a per-person number, not a team number.

How communication tools are rated

193 of 256 tools carry a rating (75%). The unweighted mean is 4.34. Weighted by review volume it is 4.02.

Zoom and Gmail have more than 100,000 reviews between them at 3.40. That is what happens when a product becomes infrastructure. Everyone has an opinion, including people who never chose it. Slack and Teams hold up better at scale. That is the useful cut for a buyer who is not starting from zero: the defaults are not equally liked.

Three names most teams already know are Slack, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams. The full ranked set is on our best communication software page.

What the parent company is now measuring

Salesforce no longer publishes a standalone Slack daily-active-user count. The figure it does publish is the one to take seriously. In the quarter ended July 31, 2026, Slackbot users grew over 150% quarter over quarter, and Salesforce reported 7.0 billion Agentic Work Units delivered to date across Agentforce and Slack, 3.2 billion of them in that quarter (Salesforce Q2 FY27).

That is the demand-side companion to our ratings table. The incumbent is not standing still. It is attaching an agent to the chat pane. A 4.20 from 65,000 reviews is the floor that agent has to beat, not a reason to ignore the product.

How often communication pricing moves

Our pricing tracker logged 20 pricing changes for these tools in 2026, 0 of them applied. Seat prices look stable until an AI add-on lands on the invoice. Recheck the plan you are actually billed on.

How this data was measured

Every figure in this report is computed live from the Toolradar directory on September 17, 2026, covering the 256 published tools we categorize under Communication. Pricing model is read from each vendor's official pricing page. The entry price is the cheapest positive monthly tier a tool publishes. Ratings and review counts are aggregated from third-party platforms (G2, Capterra, Trustpilot and others), not from Toolradar's own reviews. The leaderboard floor is 250 aggregated reviews. External statistics are cited inline and link to the exact source page. This is a directory snapshot, not a survey.
